Detailing of Hornby Caledonian Pug Loco
By Daniel Cousins
I have had a model of a Caledonian Pug Locomotive for a few years now. This was a model from my youth but still ran well. After talking about these locomotives with John and Ron at the club one night I soon realised this was an ideal starter detailing project.
My model started life as Smokey Joe and had this over its body. As it was already painted in satin black and had a correct British Railways number all I had to do was paint over the name Smokey Joe with satin black. I also painted the rear lamps red and used red transparent paint for the lens on the lamp. The buffer beams were also painted red as were the copper pipes in the cab. All that was needed to finish of was the loco crew and some early BR emblems the later were from Fox Transfers.
"To finish off I weathered it..."
These Locomotives never had tenders but had a small coal load which meant they ended up with a shunting truck with a coal load. I modelled this by cutting out the end of a Mainline 5 plank wagon. Some weight was added and then the coal. To finish off I weathered it by dry brushing the body with matt black and the metal bit’s a rust colour.
I must say I am very pleased with the outcome a ideal inexpensive way to detail a locomotive to gain experience. Many thanks must go to Ron and John for photos and information needed to do this project.
